Murderer Scott Mink is Executed by Lethal Injection

Man Killed Parents for Drug Money is Executed

By Charles Montaldo, About.com

A 36-year-old man in need of drugs who killed his parents with a hammer, kitchen knives and cutting boards then sold their personal belongings for crack has been executed by the state of Ohio.

Scott Mink went berserk when his parents hid the keys to his blue Isuzu Trooper to keep him from buying drugs. He then went to his father's toolbox and got a claw hammer, and proceeded to beat his sleeping parents, William and Sheila Mink, 79 and 72, to death, striking them with the hammer, stabbing them with kitchen knives, and beating them with cutting boards. He then strangled Sheila Mink with an electrical cord, causing her neck to break.

Over the next few days, needing money to buy drugs, Mink sold his father's Ford Escort for $100 worth of crack, the couple's television, some furniture and pictures off the walls. On the fourth day, Mink decided to turn himself into the police and confessed to killing his parents.

After pleading guilty in 2001, Mink asked a three-judge panel in Montgomery County to sentence him to death. He later appealed but the sentence was upheld.

Last week, defense attorney Gary Crim told the Ohio Parole Board that Mink wished for no further actions to stop his execution. "I think that his life since he woke up after he sobered up and was arrested is full of remorse," Crim said.

The day before, Georgia executed a man who kidnapped, raped and murdered a 2-year-old niece. Mink's execution made this the second death sentence carried out in a 24-hour period.

Ohio executed Stephen Vrabel, 47, the week before the Mink execution, for killing his girlfriend and her daughter in 1989. Vrabel also dropped his appeals.

Scott Mink, 40, was pronounced dead at 10:27 a.m. at the Southern Ohio Correction Facility. According to Cincinnati Post, his execution by injection was the quickest execution that has been carried out in Ohio since the state re-enacted the death penalty in 1981.
